Evolve Housing’s much anticipated Affordable Housing Project, located at 4 Merewether St, begins a new chapter for Newcastle’s CBD. Sitting alongside our cities various Urban Renewal Projects the apartments will bring the necessary diversity our city needs to thrive. GWH are immensely proud to have been a part of delivering such a positive initiative to the Newcastle CBD.
Nuatali Nelmes - Newcastle Lord Mayor
GWH first became involved in the project in April 2018, working with Evolve Housing in the latter stages of design development and assisting through the DA process with City of Newcastle Council. Soon after we were officially awarded the design and construct contract and appointed as the project’s builder.
Following demolition of the eastern portion of the old Civic Train Station in early 2019, construction of the actual building commenced with the installation of the first screw pile in late July 2019. Thanks to our construction methodology ‘The GWH Way’ the total build time has taken 10 months to complete.
Without compromise the 30, one, two & three-bedroom apartments have been finished to the high standard GWH have become known for. This includes the four apartments dedicated to Specialist Disability Accommodation which have been finished to a platinum level.

Being the first building to be constructed on the old rail corridor, it was incredibly important to ensure we achieved fantastic integration with the surrounding public domain areas. We’ve did this through a combination of unique paving, street furniture and landscaping. Together, these elements provide a real sense of connection to Merewether St, Museum Place and the recently completed Newcastle Visitors Information Centre.
