With a recent move by our company into multi-storey high rise residential and commercial builds, there was an obvious increase in our risk profiles for our workers. A strong commitment was required to safely maintain compliance against relevant Legislation, Australian Standards, Codes of Practice and best practice aid in persistently minimising high-risk hazards for workers.
GWH has a strong commitment to safety day-in, day-out, and has an equally strong commitment to improving systems and methodologies. Our goal at the end of the working day is for every single worker to return home to their loved ones.
GWH and the Aero Apartments project was recently recognised by the NSW Workcover Safety Awards for excellence and innovation in safety and also awarded 'The Most Innovative WHS Idea (SME) at this year's Hunter Safety Awards.
Utilising precast parapets in multi-storey construction is not uncommon, but the project team were able to remove considerable labour cost and time by introducing panel mesh placed over window openings in the precast fabrication shop. The precast arrives on site and is craned into place with mesh as fall protection until the window contractor removes the mesh and installs the window. Mesh over the punch windows on all facades of the tower saved considerable time and money in scaffolding and in installing temporary handrails on site.
